Promises for the Broken
A dear friend gave me some Scriptures to pray for a brother who is going through a very difficult and trying time in his life. This man is broken and in a place to receive healing and restoration from the Lord. These are promises we hold for him, and words we pray back to Jesus for his redemption:
Healing
But I will restore you to health
and heal your wounds,’
declares the LORD,
‘because you are called an outcast,
Zion for whom no one cares.’
-Jeremiah 30:17
Renew, Restore, Sustain Comfort
Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.Restore to me the joy of your salvation
and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me
-Psalm 51:10, 12
Your righteousness reaches to the skies, O God,
you who have done great things.
Who, O God, is like you?
Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter,
you will restore my life again;
from the depths of the earth
you will again bring me up.
You will increase my honor
and comfort me once again.
-Psalm 71:19-21
Why is my pain unending
and my wound grievous and incurable?
Will you be to me like a deceptive brook,
like a spring that fails?
Therefore this is what the LORD says:
“If you repent, I will restore you
that you may serve me;
if you utter worthy, not worthless, words,
you will be my spokesman.
Let this people turn to you,
but you must not turn to them.
I will make you a wall to this people,
a fortified wall of bronze;
they will fight against you
but will not overcome you,
for I am with you
to rescue and save you,”
declares the LORD.
“I will save you from the hands of the wicked
and redeem you from the grasp of the cruel.”
-Jeremiah 15:18-21
Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings. And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.
-1 Peter 5:6-11
Grace, Lift Up
You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. Or do you think Scripture says without reason that the spirit he caused to live in us envies intensely
But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:
“God opposes the proud
but gives grace to the humble.”
Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.
-James 4:4-10
Repent, Refresh, Restore
Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, and that he may send the Christ, who has been appointed for you—even Jesus. He must remain in heaven until the time comes for God to restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy prophets.
-Acts 3:19-20
A Heart God Can Restore: Contrite
For this is what the high and lofty One says—
he who lives forever, whose name is holy:
“I live in a high and holy place,
but also with him who is contrite and lowly in spirit,
to revive the spirit of the lowly
and to revive the heart of the contrite.
-Isaiah 57:15
Restoring Stolen Years
“So I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten,
The crawling locust,
The consuming locust,
And the chewing locust,
My great army which I sent among you.
-Joel 2:25a, NKJV
Godly Sorrow vs. Worldly Sorrow
Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.
-2 Corinthians 7:10
Bought and Sealed
You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God,
and they will reign on the earth.”
-Revelation 5:10
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
-Ephesians 4:30
And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit…
-Ephesians 1:13
…set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
-2 Corinthians 1:22
Now it is God who has made us for this very purpose and has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
-2 Corinthians 5:5
…who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.
-Ephesians 1:14
I have seen his ways, …but I will heal him; I will guide him and restore comfort to him…
-Isaiah 57:18
